In 2022, TWICE solidified their status as a "global top girl group" with the release of the group's first solo venture, Nayeon's mini album 'IM NAYEON' in June, and the full group's mini album 'BETWEEN 1&2' in August, achieving unprecedented success on the Billboard 200 chart. Both albums marked historic milestones, with 'IM NAYEON' becoming the first K-pop solo artist to enter the top 10 and 'BETWEEN 1&2' setting a record for the most top 10 entries by a K-pop girl group on the Billboard 200.
Ahead of their new album release, TWICE pre-released the English single 'MOONLIGHT SUNRISE' on January 20. The song entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart at #84 on February 4 (local time), marking their second entry into the Hot 100 following their original English single 'The Feels' in October 2021. This achievement heightened anticipation for the upcoming album.
Building on their global success and the excitement around their pre-released English single, the new mini album 'READY TO BE' showcases TWICE's firm resolve to break free from societal views and prejudices and embrace their true selves. This album invites global listeners to experience TWICE's new charm, unlike anything seen before.
The title track 'SET ME FREE' carries a progressive message of committing to protect the newfound love that awakens one's true self. Composed by Melanie Fontana and Lindgren, who worked on 'I CAN'T STOP ME', 'CRY FOR ME', and 'SCIENTIST', and written by GALACTIKA *, known for 'Heart Shaker', the song features a groovy bassline, grand strings, and a simple yet powerful sound, capturing the precarious but bold emotions with delicate vocals.
The album effectively showcases TWICE's transformation through trailers, teaser videos, and music videos that are interconnected. The trailer and teasers reveal the members ready to find themselves, shedding all pretenses to enjoy freedom, leading viewers into a cinematic experience of exhilarating liberation right from the start of the music video.
The 'SET ME FREE' music video focuses on TWICE's journey of shedding uncomfortable gazes and relationships to seek change. Feeling constrained, the members gain freedom and confidence in themselves and each other, leading the narrative autonomously by moving across sets without frame restrictions or piecing together films they shot themselves. The unique direction using a film-within-a-film concept and the use of 'explosion' as a device to pull viewers into reality adds freshness, while their bright smiles upon facing their true selves deliver catharsis.
The album 'READY TO BE' features a total of 7 tracks, including the title track 'SET ME FREE', the pre-released English single 'MOONLIGHT SUNRISE', 'GOT THE THRILLS', 'BLAME IT ON ME', 'WALLFLOWER', 'CRAZY STUPID LOVE', and the English version of 'SET ME FREE', fully satisfying both domestic and international fans.
The 12th mini album was completed with contributions from globally renowned teams, including Lee Woo Min 'collapsedone' and MRCH, LDN Noise, Lostboy, and singer-songwriter Tayla Parx. Dahyun, who has consistently contributed to the album's credits, showcases her talent by writing the lyrics for 'BLAME IT ON ME' and 'CRAZY STUPID LOVE'.
Entering their 9th year since debut, TWICE reaches a turning point with the mini album 'READY TO BE' and the title track 'SET ME FREE'.
