On January 8, 2018, JYP Entertainment's new group Stray Kids will release their pre-debut album 'Mixtape'. Stray Kids is a boy group selected through the reality program 'Stray Kids', presented by JYP and Mnet in October 2017, and consists of nine members: Bang Chan, Kim Woojin, Lee Minho, Seo Changbin, Hwang Hyunjin, Han Jisung, Felix, Kim Seungmin, and Yang Jeongin.
As the group name 'Stray Kids', meaning 'to stray off the path', suggests, they present a differentiated personality and unrestrained freedom through their music. In the broadcast 'Stray Kids' which documented their debut process, the members actively participated in songwriting, producing, conceptualizing, and performances. Stray Kids completed all five missions with their original songs and secured their debut with the most complete 9-member formation.
Before their official debut, the 9-member boy group Stray Kids, set to lead JYP's future, will release the album 'Mixtape', filled with 7 self-composed tracks. 'Mixtape' comprises original songs showcased in the program 'Stray Kids', including the digital single released on November 1, ‘Hellevator’, and tracks like 'Grrr Law of Total Madness', 'Young Wings', 'YAYAYA', 'GLOW', 'School Life', and '4419'.
Stray Kids, covering a wide range of genres from electronica to hip-hop, infused each track with a fresh sound and performance. The title track 'Hellevator' is a declaration of their intent to break through times of pain and effort and ascend to the top, combining the words ‘Hell’ and ‘Elevator’. The members composed a tight flow harmonizing with the dark atmosphere and melody and added dynamic changes to the hook melodies in the first and second verses.
Moreover, the 'Hellevator' music video, showcasing the individuality and powerful performances of the nine members, made a strong impression with over 13 million views on YouTube, captivating music fans both domestically and internationally.
Additionally, the album 'Mixtape' features self-composed tracks reflecting the members' authenticity, including the hip-hop track 'Grrr Law of Total Madness' that interprets teenage rebellion from a new perspective, 'Young Wings', expressing the psychology of youths who don’t want to appear young but are scared of becoming adults, 'YAYAYA', a powerful sound depicting the story of 'I' dreaming of a successful future amidst anxiety and confidence, the ballad 'GLOW' that tells the autobiographical story of the Stray Kids members chasing their dreams, 'School Life', depicting the monotonous life of students tired of repetitive school life with witty metaphors and relatable expressions, and the lyrical sound of '4419', recalling the bus rides with a childhood friend, with verses composed from actual stories.
Stray Kids took their first step in 2018 with the album 'Mixtape', brimming with unrefined raw potential. The movement of these nine gems, who are set to continue the legacy of JYP artists and make a significant impact in the music industry, is highly anticipated.
